Leave Someone to Help

Joining an attack is a team decision. Check who will cover the space you leave.

What the coach says

  1. Your team is attacking. Before you join in, look at who is staying behind the ball.
  2. Two teammates are already forward. The space behind them still needs you.
  3. You’re the central midfielder behind the ball. What is useful here?
  4. Hold behind the attack. You’re a return option and a first line of help if the ball is lost.
  5. The other midfielders are already ahead. Holding behind them gives cover and a return pass.
  6. Return the ball and compare who is now protecting the space behind the attack.
  7. Another teammate holds that deeper position this time. You can offer an angle farther forward.
  8. With a teammate covering behind you, what can you offer now?
  9. Move into a useful supporting angle. Your deeper teammate is looking after the space behind.
  10. Joining an attack is a team decision. Check who will cover the space you leave.
