Make a Passing Lane

Change the angle when a defender blocks the pass. Keep an angle that already works.

What the coach says

  1. A defender stands between the fixo and left wing.
  2. How can the left wing become available?
  3. The wing moves wider. The lane opens.
  4. Pass along the new angle.
  5. Return the ball before the defender closes the lane.
  6. The defender follows the wide route.
  7. The wide pass is covered. Who offers another angle?
  8. Use the other side instead of forcing the old pass.
  9. After switching, the fixo moves behind the right ala to offer a return at a different angle.

Quiz questions

Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.

  1. Question 1

How can the left wing become available?

    • Move into the inside lane
    • Move toward the touchline

Coach’s explanation: Moving wider opens a different angle around the defender.

  2. Question 2

The wide pass is covered. Who offers another angle?

    • Pass to the left ala
    • Pass to the right ala

Coach’s explanation: The right wing offers a clear route on the other side.

  3. Question 3

True or false? When the wide pass is covered, keep trying that same pass.

    • False
    • True

Coach’s explanation: It's false: we use the other side instead of forcing the covered pass.

  4. Question 4

A defender blocks the pass to the left ala. Which picture opens a lane?

    • Left ala moves inside
    • Left ala moves wider
    • Left ala stays still

Coach’s explanation: Moving wider changes the angle, so the lane around the defender opens.

  5. Question 5

Now the defender blocks the right ala, and their ala steps inside. Which pass is open?

    • Pass to the left ala out wide
    • Pass to the pivot up the middle
    • Pass to the right ala

Coach’s explanation: The left ala is wide, so that lane is open and away from the defender.
