Move to change the passing lane, then read the defender again.
What the coach says
- One defender stands between the ball and the left midfielder.
- The midfielder moves wider to create a different angle.
- Look at the new left passing route.
- Use the new angle before pressure changes.
- Return the ball while the lane is still clear.
- The defender moves across to cover that left route.
- Now the defender covers the new left lane.
- Pass right. The left midfielder remains available for later.
- The receiver looks forward while support stays behind.
Quiz questions
Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.
Question 1
Which passing lane avoids the defender?
Coach’s explanation: Moving sideways took the passing route away from the defender.
Question 2
Which forward option has the clearer lane now?
Coach’s explanation: The defender moved into the left route. The right midfielder still offers a clear pass.
Question 3
Put the steps in order.
Coach’s explanation: The block makes you move wider, the defender follows you, and that opens the pass to the right.
Question 4
The defender hides the left midfielder in a passing shadow. Which picture gets them free?
Coach’s explanation: Moving wider changes the angle, so the lane no longer runs through the defender.
Question 5
Now a blue midfielder steps into the lane to our right winger. Which pass is open?
Coach’s explanation: The striker's lane is clear, while the other two lanes run through blue players.
