Front Pair: When Can Midfield Join?

Three-three-two has two strikers facing three backs. A wide midfielder can join the first pressure only when the other midfielders protect behind.

What the coach says

  1. Three-three-two has two strikers facing three backs.
  2. A wide midfielder can join the first pressure when the other midfielders protect behind.
  3. The outside back receives close to our right midfielder. The two strikers close the return routes, and the other midfielders are already inside.
  4. The outside back receives close by and the midfield cover is in place. What should the right midfielder do?
  5. The right midfielder arrives from outside as the other two midfielders close the inside lanes. The strikers keep separate return jobs.
  6. The outside back returns to the goalkeeper instead of carrying into the uncovered third-back lane.
  7. The outside back receives again several metres farther away. This touch is controlled, while our central and far midfielders are still recovering.
  8. The same back now controls farther away while midfield cover recovers. Which response fits this new distance?
  9. The right midfielder reconnects with the recovering pair. The backs and keeper drop together behind the new midfield line.
  10. Blue connects inside, but the receiving midfielder faces a connected block instead of a gap behind a late presser.
  11. The front pair cannot pressure three backs alone. Read the wide midfielder’s arrival time and the cover behind before adding a third presser.

Quiz questions

Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.

  1. Question 1

The outside back receives close by and the midfield cover is in place. What should the right midfielder do?

    • Hold with the midfield line
    • Press the outside back

Coach’s explanation: The short approach can arrive with the receiver’s touch while the midfield pair protects the space behind.

  2. Question 2

The same back now controls farther away while midfield cover recovers. Which response fits this new distance?

    • Hold with the midfield line
    • Press the outside back

Coach’s explanation: The longer approach would arrive late. Reconnecting with midfield protects the inside route until the unit is ready to press again.

  3. Question 3

True or false? Our two strikers can press all three of Blue's backs alone.

    • False
    • True

Coach’s explanation: It's false. Two strikers cannot reach three backs, so a midfielder must help at the right time.

  4. Question 4

Blue's back receives close to our right midfielder. Which picture adds the third presser safely?

    • All three midfielders push up
    • Central midfielder goes to the ball
    • Right midfielder presses, two stay inside

Coach’s explanation: The nearest midfielder presses, and the other two close the inside lanes behind.

  5. Question 5

Now Blue's other back receives close to our left midfielder, with cover inside. What happens next?

    • Central midfielder runs out to press
    • Left midfielder holds with the midfield
    • Left midfielder presses the back

Coach’s explanation: The back is close and the cover is ready, so the nearest midfielder presses.
