3-4-1: Turn Four Midfielders into Front Options

Three-four-one starts with four midfielders and one striker. After a regain, the two wide midfielders can join the lone striker while the central pair connects behind.

What the coach says

  1. Three-four-one starts with four midfielders.
  2. After a regain, the two wide midfielders can join the lone striker.
  3. The central pair stays connected behind those three attackers.
  4. The left midfielder is already high beside the striker, occupying the two backs. The right midfielder can reach the other high outside lane while the central pair has control.
  5. We won the ball. Where should the right midfielder run to be a forward option?
  6. The right midfielder advances beside the lone striker and the first wide runner. The back three and central pair keep their deeper jobs.
  7. The regained ball reaches the right-side runner beyond the two-back line’s immediate reach.
  8. Blue’s central midfielder has recovered as a third back. Our ball carrier now faces back pressure, and the other central midfielder is screened.
  9. A third defender has recovered and our central bridge is screened. Which right-midfield position now reconnects the carrier?
  10. The right midfielder comes nearer as the central pair changes angles and the back three remain available behind.
  11. The carrier uses the nearer outside pass. The team can rebuild the attack instead of forcing the earlier high route.
  12. A midfield four can create a front three after a regain. If the high advantage disappears and the central bridge is blocked, come nearer before expanding again.

Quiz questions

Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.

  1. Question 1

We won the ball. Where should the right midfielder run to be a forward option?

    • Offer the nearer outside lane
    • Take the higher outside lane

Coach’s explanation: The right midfielder becomes a third forward option beyond two backs while the central pair remains connected behind.

  2. Question 2

A third defender has recovered and our central bridge is screened. Which right-midfield position now reconnects the carrier?

    • Offer the nearer outside lane
    • Take the higher outside lane

Coach’s explanation: The nearer outside angle restores a reachable pass while the deeper unit adjusts to the new pressure.

  3. Question 3

After the regain, which picture turns our midfield four into three front options?

    • Both wide players beside the striker
    • Both wide players stay deep
    • Only one wide player high

Coach’s explanation: Both wide players join the striker, while the central pair connects behind.

  4. Question 4

True or false? With a third blue defender back, the high pass is still best.

    • False
    • True

Coach’s explanation: It's false. The high advantage is gone, so the runner comes nearer before we expand again.

  5. Question 5

Blue drops a defender onto our high left midfielder. Tap where they reconnect with the carrier.

    • Even higher, down the line
    • Inside, into the middle
    • Nearer, out wide

Coach’s explanation: Coming nearer and wide opens a safe pass, just like the right midfielder did.
