2-4-2: Protect the Far Channel
Two-four-two has only two backs but four midfielders. If the backs handle the near winger and central striker, the far wide midfielder can cover the remaining outside run.
What the coach says
- Two-four-two has only two backs.
- Four midfielders share the jobs ahead of them.
- When the backs handle the near winger and striker, the far wide midfielder can cover the remaining outside run.
- The near back delays the ball and the other back follows the striker. The far winger runs outside them, close enough for our right midfielder to recover with that player.
- Our two backs account for the near winger and striker. Which right-midfield recovery handles the remaining outside run?
- The right midfielder recovers into the far channel. The two backs retain their existing opponents and the central midfielders protect inside.
- Blue returns inside instead of finding an unattended far runner beyond the back two.
- Our left central midfielder controls the inside pass. The far winger begins dropping away from the high line.
- The far winger has dropped away. Our midfielder keeps control while the two backs reconnect against the two opponents who remain high.
- The far winger has dropped and our midfielder controls the ball. What should the right midfielder restore?
- The right midfielder restores width as the two backs reconnect and the central pair opens passing angles.
- The left central midfielder connects across to the returning wide midfielder, giving the regain a separate outside route.
- Use the midfield four’s outside player for the outside threat when the central pair already protects inside. Restore width once that temporary defending job ends.
Quiz questions
Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.
Question 1
Our two backs account for the near winger and striker. Which right-midfield recovery handles the remaining outside run?
Coach’s explanation: The right midfielder is close enough to recover with the outside runner while the central pair preserves inside cover.
Question 2
The far winger has dropped and our midfielder controls the ball. What should the right midfielder restore?
Coach’s explanation: The extra outside defending assignment has ended. Returning wide restores the missing member of the midfield four as an outlet.
Question 3
True or false? Our right back should leave the striker to chase the far winger.
Coach’s explanation: It's false. The backs keep their players, and the far wide midfielder covers the outside run.
Question 4
Put the defending and the regain in order, from first to last.
Coach’s explanation: We cover the far run, blue goes inside, we win it, then width comes back.
Question 5
Now blue attacks down our right. Where does our left midfielder recover?
Coach’s explanation: The far wide midfielder covers the outside run, just like on the other side.
