Two Options for a Restart
On our goal kick, two defenders split wide so the keeper always has an open short pass.
What the coach says
- In this England nine-a-side example, blue waits outside the penalty area. There is no retreat line.
- The opponent stands in the left passing route.
- Use the right defender. The ball is in play when kicked and clearly moving.
- Return to the goalkeeper for another picture.
- The opponent changes sides and covers the right route.
- The goalkeeper checks both options again.
- Choose the left defender instead.
- The defenders give options, not fixed instructions for every restart.
Quiz questions
Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.
Question 1
Which short option has the clear route?
Coach’s explanation: The opponent covers the left lane. The right defender has a clear passing route.
Question 2
Which route is available in this second picture?
Coach’s explanation: The opponent now covers the right. Two options let the goalkeeper change the plan.
Question 3
True or false? At this goal kick, the ball is in play once kicked and moving.
Coach’s explanation: It's true. Once the kick clearly moves the ball, play is on.
Question 4
Which picture gives the goalkeeper two short passes that one forward can't both block?
Coach’s explanation: Split wide, one forward cannot block both routes, so one stays open.
Question 5
Now two opponents block both side routes. Which short pass is still open?
Coach’s explanation: Both side routes are blocked, so the center defender is the free short option.
