Receive: Turn or Connect

Check the space before receiving; a turn and a return solve different pressure.

What the coach says

  1. The midfielder checks over a shoulder. Pressure is on the right.
  2. The pass arrives. Open your hips toward the space on the left.
  3. Look at the defender before choosing the next touch.
  4. Take the ball left, away from that pressure.
  5. The midfielder can now see the winger.
  6. Try another picture. The ball returns while the defender closes ahead.
  7. The midfielder receives again, with support behind.
  8. Check the space ahead and the teammate behind.
  9. Return the ball, then offer a fresh angle.
  10. Move sideways so the next pass has a new route.

Quiz questions

Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.

  1. Question 1

Which first touch fits this picture?

    • Left into space
    • Right toward the defender

Coach’s explanation: The defender is on the right. The left touch gives room to look forward.

  2. Question 2

    What helps keep this ball?

    • Return it to the supporting defender
    • Turn straight ahead

Coach’s explanation: Pressure is directly ahead. The clear return lets the team keep the ball.

  3. Question 3

True or false? The midfielder waits for the ball to arrive before looking around.

    • False
    • True

Coach’s explanation: It's false. The midfielder checks over a shoulder first, so they already know where the pressure is.

  4. Question 4

The midfielder just returned the ball to the defender. What should the midfielder do next?

    • Move sideways to offer a new angle
    • Run far forward past the defender
    • Stand still and watch the pass

Coach’s explanation: Moving sideways gives the next pass a new route around the defender.

  5. Question 5

Now the defender presses from your left side. Where should your first touch go?

    • Forward and to the left
    • Forward and to the right
    • Straight back toward our goal

Coach’s explanation: The pressure is on the left, so the open space is to your right.
