Our Eleven: Shape & Shared Jobs
Understand the goalkeeper and each line, then adapt midfield support as a fullback advances.
What the coach says
- Your team has eleven players: one goalkeeper and ten outfield players. Attack the far goal and protect the goal behind your keeper.
- Here we start with four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards. Four-three-three leaves out the keeper; one-four-three-three includes them.
- The keeper protects the goal and supports passes behind the defense. They keep adjusting as the ball and pressure move.
- Two center backs protect the middle. The two fullbacks defend the sides and can support attacks. Four defenders share the space instead of guarding fixed spots.
- Three midfielders connect the lines. Here one starts deeper, while two offer angles ahead. With no ball, they help protect the middle.
- Two wingers give width; the center forward gives height. The forwards also help defend. These starting jobs can change as teammates move.
- Our left fullback carries forward to support the winger. Look at the space they leave behind.
- The center backs still protect the middle. A midfielder can offer a return angle and help cover behind the advancing fullback.
- You are the deeper midfielder. Where could you help behind the left fullback?
- Move behind and inside the fullback. Staying connected gives the player on the ball another option.
- The fullback uses that support. A midfielder can help an attack without running ahead of the ball.
- Return through the center back. The whole back line can help move the ball to a new side.
- The other center back receives. The left fullback drops toward the back line as the ball travels across.
- The right fullback receives. The next supporting job is on this side.
- The right fullback carries forward. The winger is higher, and the nearby midfielder already offers an angle ahead.
- You are still the deeper midfielder. Where would you help the right fullback now?
- Shift across behind the new ball carrier. The formation gives you a starting job, but the ball helps you decide where to do it.
- The return reaches you. Fullbacks, midfielders and center backs worked together on both sides.
- Other formations are possible. In practice, try another role and identify help ahead, beside and behind you. The useful relationships matter more than memorizing numbers.
