Lost It? Protect the Middle
After losing the ball, protect a route to goal; approach when a teammate can cover.
What the coach says
- Gold attacks the far goal. Watch what changes when our pass is intercepted.
- Blue cuts out the pass. We are defending our own goal now.
- You are the center midfielder, behind the ball. Blue has a runner nearer our goal.
- Where can you protect the central pass now?
- Run back across the passing lane. Blue must look for another route.
- Blue passes sideways. Recovering has helped protect the middle.
- Our right midfielder is now close and goal-side. The center midfielder is covering behind.
- What helps the right midfielder slow this attack?
- Close the space without diving in. Keep the ball in front of you.
- Blue holds the ball. Our defenders have time to stay together.
- When we lose it, look at the ball, our goal, and our help. Your next job can change.
- Blue’s middle player moves behind the wide carrier for support. Our covering midfielder shifts with that new passing angle.
