Move the Block, Then Switch

Draw a compact defensive unit to one side before using the far-side route.

What the coach says

  1. A compact block can close a direct cross-court pass. Use a deeper player to make the defenders move, then look outside them.
  2. The left side attracts the block. The fixo supports behind the pressure; the right ala stays beyond its far edge.
  3. The block has shifted left. Which first pass can take the ball around it?
  4. Play behind the press. The fixo can now see the right ala outside the narrow block.
  5. The block starts moving back towards the middle, but the far defender is still well inside the right ala.
  6. The far defender is still narrow. Which pass completes the switch before the block arrives?
  7. The right ala receives outside the block. Teammates change their support angles and the defense shifts together towards the new side.

Quiz questions

Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.

  1. Question 1

The block has shifted left. Which first pass can take the ball around it?

    • Pass directly across court
    • Pass through the deeper fixo

Coach’s explanation: The deeper angle stays behind the pressing line and opens the second pass towards the far side.

  2. Question 2

The far defender is still narrow. Which pass completes the switch before the block arrives?

    • Pass across to the right ala
    • Pass back to the left ala

Coach’s explanation: The right ala is beyond the block’s outside edge. Switch now while that width is still available.

  3. Question 3

The block shifts left. Tap where the right ala waits.

    • Inside the block, near the ball
    • Up high beside the pivot
    • Wide, beyond the block's far edge

Coach’s explanation: Outside the far edge, the right ala is ready for the switch later.

  4. Question 4

How do we move the block, then switch? Put the steps in order.

    • Draw the block to the left
    • Fixo switches to the right ala
    • Pass back to the deeper fixo
    • Right ala receives outside the block

Coach’s explanation: Pull the block one way, go around it through the fixo, then switch wide.

  5. Question 5

Now the block has shifted right. The fixo has the ball. Which pass completes the switch?

    • Pass across to the left ala
    • Pass into the pivot
    • Pass to the right ala

Coach’s explanation: The far defender is still narrow, so the left ala is free outside the block.
