Touchline Press: Close the Return
Coordinate a wide press with a teammate screening the inside return.
What the coach says
- A touchline press needs two jobs: our left ala approaches the ball and our pivot takes away the inside return. Our fixo keeps Blue’s pivot covered.
- Our left ala closes the wide receiver. Our pivot reads the inside return while our right ala narrows behind the press.
- Your teammate is pressing the ball near the line. Which job completes the press?
- Our pivot closes the return lane while our left ala stays with the ball. Our fixo remains goal-side of Blue’s pivot.
- The ball carrier escapes down the line with a touch. The original press is beaten, so the nearest cover must slow the advance.
- The wide press has been bypassed. Where should you move while the right ala covers the middle?
- The fixo delays from inside. The right ala becomes central cover, the beaten presser recovers, and the pivot closes the next return.
Quiz questions
Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.
Question 1
Your teammate is pressing the ball near the line. Which job completes the press?
Coach’s explanation: This position lies between the wide receiver and their inside support. The ball-side teammate can press without losing the return lane.
Question 2
The wide press has been bypassed. Where should you move while the right ala covers the middle?
Coach’s explanation: You are the nearest cover. Approach from inside while the right ala protects the central attacker.
Question 3
True or false? In a touchline press, the PIVOT also runs at the ball.
Coach’s explanation: It's false. The LEFT ALA presses the ball, and the PIVOT takes away the inside return.
Question 4
Blue wants to pass back inside. Which picture shows the press done right?
Coach’s explanation: The ALA presses, and the PIVOT blocks the return, so Blue is stuck by the line.
Question 5
Now the press is on the right side. Drag the PIVOT to finish the press.
Coach’s explanation: The RIGHT ALA presses the ball, so the PIVOT closes the pass back inside.
