Keeper Regain: Release Beyond the Press
After winning possession, distinguish a nearby marked outlet from a clear receiver beyond the first press.
What the coach says
- Your goalkeeper has just won the ball from Blue and controls it at their feet in open play. Scan beyond the nearest teammate before the opponents recover.
- The first presser screens the short fixo. The right ala moves beyond that pressure while the pivot occupies the last defender.
- The short outlet is screened. Which distribution bypasses that first pressure?
- The goalkeeper releases with their feet. The fixo and left ala follow in support while the passer returns towards goal.
- Blue’s wide defender recovers across the backward diagonal. The pivot still offers a forward connection beyond them.
- The release beat the first press. Which next pass preserves that advantage?
- The pivot receives ahead of the recovering pressure. The right ala offers a lay-off and the fixo stays behind the attack.
Quiz questions
Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.
Question 1
The short outlet is screened. Which distribution bypasses that first pressure?
Coach’s explanation: The right ala has moved beyond the first presser and the diagonal lane is clear. Release before the recovering block can close it.
Question 2
The release beat the first press. Which next pass preserves that advantage?
Coach’s explanation: The pivot is ahead of the recovering defender and the passing lane remains open. Connect before the defense recovers together.
Question 3
True or false? The short pass to the FIXO is the safe choice here.
Coach’s explanation: It's false. The presser screens the fixo, so the keeper releases beyond the press.
Question 4
Put the keeper's release in the right order.
Coach’s explanation: Scan, get beyond the press, release, then play forward to the pivot.
Question 5
Now the keeper wins it on the other side. Which release beats the press?
Coach’s explanation: The left ala is beyond the first presser, so one pass beats the press.
