Keeper: Defend the Goal or the Space
Adjust the goalkeeper’s depth to the attacker’s threat and whether a defender still provides cover.
What the coach says
- A goalkeeper’s starting position changes with the danger. When a teammate can pressure the shot, protect the goal and leave room to react.
- The ball carrier approaches from the left, with the fixo still between attacker and goal. The keeper adjusts laterally behind that pressure.
- Your fixo can still pressure the attacker. Which position preserves a view of the shot?
- The keeper sets behind cover. The fixo remains responsible for the ball while the other defenders track the next attackers.
- Blue plays across to the free runner on the right. The pass travels ahead of the recovering defenders, leaving that receiver with a clear route towards goal.
- The receiver is now beyond your defenders. Where should you move to reduce the exposed angle?
- The goalkeeper closes the angle under control as the fixo and right ala recover. Stay balanced and ready to react to the attacker’s next touch.
Quiz questions
Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.
Question 1
Your fixo can still pressure the attacker. Which position preserves a view of the shot?
Coach’s explanation: Adjust behind the defender and protect the angle. Their pressure gives you time to read the shot rather than rush out.
Question 2
The receiver is now beyond your defenders. Where should you move to reduce the exposed angle?
Coach’s explanation: There is no defender between the receiver and the shooting route. Move towards that angle under control while teammates recover.
Question 3
The goalkeeper is hidden. Where should the keeper stand while the fixo pressures?
Coach’s explanation: The fixo pressures the ball, so the keeper sets near goal and keeps a view of the shot.
Question 4
The receiver is free on the right. Which picture shows the best keeper position?
Coach’s explanation: A few controlled steps toward the ball close the angle, and you can still react.
Question 5
Now the free runner is on the left. Drag the KEEPER to close the angle.
Coach’s explanation: A few steps toward the ball side close the near post, and you stay balanced.
