Free-Kick: Keep a Safety Player
Coordinate the restart with a player who can collect the return and protect a counterattack.
What the coach says
- At a normal free kick, the delivery and team movement must work together. Keep a deeper safety player instead of sending every outfield player towards goal.
- The pivot and far ala occupy the defenders. An opponent stays high for a counterattack, so the fixo must offer support while staying goal-side of that threat.
- Two teammates are already forward and Blue has a high outlet. Where should you support?
- The fixo stays connected behind the ball. The restart can be recycled if the defended forward routes are not available.
- The free kick is played safely back. A defender leaves the left side to press the fixo, while the original taker moves into a new receiving angle.
- The ball is live and a defender presses you. Which pass keeps possession outside that pressure?
- The original taker receives outside pressure. The fixo adjusts behind, the forward players change their angles, and Blue must reorganise.
Quiz questions
Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.
Question 1
Two teammates are already forward and Blue has a high outlet. Where should you support?
Coach’s explanation: This gives the taker a safe return and keeps you between the high opponent and your own goal.
Question 2
The ball is live and a defender presses you. Which pass keeps possession outside that pressure?
Coach’s explanation: The taker moved away from the pressing defender. Releasing outside retains the ball and keeps your team’s balance.
Question 3
The FIXO is hidden. Where should the fixo support this free kick?
Coach’s explanation: The fixo supports behind the ball and stays between Blue's high player and our goal.
Question 4
Which picture keeps a safety player at this free kick?
Coach’s explanation: The fixo stays behind the ball, ready for a return pass and to stop a counter.
Question 5
A defender presses the fixo from the front. Which pass keeps the ball?
Coach’s explanation: The right ala is outside the pressure with a clear lane, so we keep the ball.
