Diamond Defense: Move as a Unit

Shift the block towards the ball without opening the central passing corridor.

What the coach says

  1. The diamond has a front player and a deeper defender. These two protect its length.
  2. Two alas form the sides. When one side presses, the other helps close the middle.
  3. Blue plays left. The left ala approaches; the fixo stays with the central attacker, and the front player closes the return angle.
  4. The ball is on the other side. Where can you protect the middle and still see the far attacker?
  5. Our far ala narrows into the gap. Our fixo still covers Blue’s pivot, so Blue cannot pass straight through the diamond.
  6. Blue returns behind the front player and prepares a switch. The block has time to shift across with the pass.
  7. The pass reaches the right. The right ala becomes the presser, while the left ala now protects the inside corridor.
  8. The ball has switched. Which movement keeps the diamond connected?
  9. The unit shifts instead of chasing in a line. Blue still faces pressure, central cover and protection on the far side.

Quiz questions

Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.

  1. Question 1

The ball is on the other side. Where can you protect the middle and still see the far attacker?

    • Hold near the far touchline
    • Move inside behind the press

Coach’s explanation: Step inside to block the middle, but keep watching your attacker out wide.

  2. Question 2

The ball has switched. Which movement keeps the diamond connected?

    • Move inside on this side
    • Run across toward the ball

Coach’s explanation: Move inside as the new far-side defender. The right ala presses and the fixo remains the deeper cover.

  3. Question 3

True or false? When one ALA presses, the other ALA helps close the middle.

    • False
    • True

Coach’s explanation: It's true. The far ALA narrows in, so Blue cannot pass through the diamond.

  4. Question 4

Blue passes the ball back to the middle. What does our diamond do next?

    • Everyone sprints at the new ball
    • Shift across together with the pass
    • Stay exactly where they are

Coach’s explanation: The whole diamond slides across with the pass, so pressure, cover and the middle stay connected.

  5. Question 5

Blue's PIVOT drifts to the far side. Drag the FIXO to keep covering them.

    • Behind Blue's PIVOT, near our goal
    • Stay in the middle
    • Up near the ball

Coach’s explanation: The FIXO stays goal-side of Blue's PIVOT, so the pass through the diamond is still covered.
