Outnumbered: Buy Time for Recovery

A lone defender delays the central threat until a recovering teammate can share the work.

What the coach says

  1. Blue has two attackers against your fixo. Chasing the ball at full speed would leave the other attacker alone. Protect the central route while help recovers.
  2. The ball advances. The fixo stays between the threats, and the right ala sprints back towards the far attacker.
  3. Help is still behind the play. Which route delays the two attackers?
  4. The fixo delays instead of diving in. The right ala recovers goal-side of the far attacker as the left ala follows the ball.
  5. The far attacker is now covered. The ball carrier carries left, giving the fixo a clear job without leaving a free player behind.
  6. Your teammate is goal-side of the far attacker. What can you do now?
  7. The fixo approaches under control. The right ala tracks the far attacker, the left ala completes recovery, and the goalkeeper adjusts behind the pressure.

Quiz questions

Try to answer before you read the coach’s explanation. On the island you answer each one on the pitch.

  1. Question 1

Help is still behind the play. Which route delays the two attackers?

    • Approach the ball carrier
    • Drop between ball and far attacker

Coach’s explanation: Stay close enough to influence the ball while protecting the pass towards goal. This buys the recovering ala time.

  2. Question 2

Your teammate is goal-side of the far attacker. What can you do now?

    • Approach the ball carrier
    • Drop back toward the goal

Coach’s explanation: Cover has arrived. You can now approach from inside while the right ala protects the pass across goal.

  3. Question 3

The FIXO is alone against two. Tap where the RIGHT ALA sprints to help.

    • Goal-side of the far attacker
    • Next to the FIXO at the ball
    • Stay up the court

Coach’s explanation: The RIGHT ALA recovers goal-side of the far attacker, so the FIXO is not alone.

  4. Question 4

Put the two versus one defence in order, from first to last.

    • FIXO drops between both attackers
    • FIXO steps up to the ball
    • RIGHT ALA sprints back goal-side
    • The far attacker is covered

Coach’s explanation: Delay first, wait for help, then press once the far attacker is covered.

  5. Question 5

Now Blue attacks two versus one on the other side. Drag the FIXO to delay them.

    • Between both attackers, backing off
    • Out on the far attacker
    • Right at the ball carrier

Coach’s explanation: Between both attackers the FIXO guards the middle and buys time for help.
