Who Goes, Who Helps?

Decide together. One player puts pressure on the ball; another looks after the next danger.

What the coach says

  1. They have the ball. If both of you rush in, who looks after the space behind?
  2. Your teammate gets close to the ball. Stay behind them, ready for a pass or a dribble.
  3. You’re the deeper midfielder. What helps your teammate here?
  4. Our nearer midfielder holds the pressure while the other moves into cover. Now one of us presses the ball and one of us covers behind.
  5. Their carrier tests the pressure with a short carry. Our nearest midfielder moves with the ball, and the covering midfielder keeps a second defensive line.
  6. Reset the two midfielders. Their distances from the carrier will decide who pressures and who covers.
  7. Your teammate is farther away in this picture. You’re the one who can slow the carrier down.
  8. You’re the central midfielder. What is your job this time?
  9. Now our central midfielder is nearer and takes the pressure. Our other midfielder covers behind instead of chasing the same ball.
  10. Their carrier moves again. Our nearer midfielder follows without crossing into the covering teammate’s path. Pressure and cover stay connected.

    • Both chase the ball together

  5. Question 5

The central midfielder is nearer and presses this time. You are the other midfielder. Where do you go?

    • Behind the presser, covering
    • Join the press at the ball
    • Stay out wide
