A checkered puffer can blow itself up into a round ball when it is surprised. In Brazil, a grandma nicknamed her grandson after the pufferfish, and he grew up to be a Bahia star called Baiaco. This one puffs up like a football when it hears a whistle.
On Futbol Island the checkered puffer can be caught at:
- Turtle Bank: A wide sand bank on the last stretch to Coral Cay, looking out toward Turtle Sandbar. Clear, sandy shallows where young sharks cruise past.
Size on the island: 10–25 cm.
